Understanding the requirements

Devin Griffith Photography has a simple but effective process that allows us to build a full and detailed image of what you are looking for in the final photograph. The first step is to have a discussion with you and find out where and how the photography will be used, what style of shots you’re looking for and what you want to emphasise in each photo. Other items we may wish to discuss are branding inclusion, orientation of the images, shoot locations if you have a place in mind. We will also be looking closely at the finished output that you have in mind whether that is web use or print media, corporate presentation, magazine ad, it’s often at this point that we find that these discussions can be very useful in outlining some possibilities through our experience that you may not have considered previously.

What’s next?

Once back in the studio the final process takes place transforming the RAW images into stunning photographs.

First of all the images are downloaded from the camera’s memory cards on to the computer. After the RAW files are saved they are archived on a internal server on two hard drives for safekeeping. This is to ensure that in the event of a computer failure, your photos are safely backed up in two separate discs. Using specialist software the RAW files can start the process of becoming the final image. Working in the digital darkroom, any unwanted artefact’s like company logo’s etc that couldn’t be removed on site, are carefully removed from the photo and the background seamlessly blended in. After all the fine-tuning of the colour balance, brightness, colour saturation, contrast. The photos are sharpened to enhance the way the photos appear in print. Them they are exported to the file format that you require e.g. TIFF, JPEG, PSD, 8 bit or 16 bit, as well the DPI(72dpi/300dpi) and colour-space(prophoto RGB, sRGB, CYMK) that you need for the use of the photos. Commonly the images are then burned on a CD or DVD and sent to you, we also supply a FTP service to all our clients, for fast delivery of the photos. The way it work we upload the images in a ZIP file and send you a web link when you click on the link a download box will appear on your pc all you need to do is click on the save button and tell is where to save the file on your PC. This is a much faster over mailing a CD or DVD to you and can make your project go a lot faster in the end.

Some clients find the concept of copyright and licensing quite confusing. This page is aimed at helping clients who may be struggling with this area of commissioning a photographer.

Copyright, who owns the images?

Copyright and licensing can be a confusing concept.

Copyright refers to any work the photographer makes, the photo will always be the property of the photographer.

Licensing refers to the client that wishes to use the work of a photographer for their needs be it for PR, print ads and so no.

Licenses are designed to fit the client’s needs for how long the client can use the photo to the number of publications the photo will be in. If you have read the “Can I use the photos as often as I want without restrictions” under copyright in the paragraph before this you will see the you can use the photo as you see fit but this is not the case with all photographers.
